The Best Way for Garages to Increase Workshop Revenue

The Best Way for Garages to Increase Workshop Revenue
Are you a workshop owner eager to increase revenue? One of the most underestimated avenues for revenue growth is the strategic investment in opening an MOT Station. In this article, we will delve into all the reasons why investing in an MOT Bay can not only ensure mandatory compliance for all drivers but also serve as a powerful addition to your workshop for boosting revenue.
Mandatory Service for All Drivers
As every driver is aware, an annual MOT test is a mandatory requirement for all vehicles 3 years old or older. It is not a simple routine check; it is an important legal obligation that must be done. This means that regardless of economic conditions or personal finance situations, an MOT must be done annually. Without a valid MOT certificate, you are legally not allowed to drive your vehicle unless it is to your MOT appointment. As this is a legal requirement, integrating an MOT Bay into your workshop can allow you to tap into this consistent demand, creating a reliable income stream.
Upselling Opportunities
It is more than a legal requirement to get an MOT test done, it is the perfect golden opportunity for garage owners to sell additional services. As you or your mechanics identify potential issues during the MOT testing process, you can recommend and perform additional repairs. Not only does this ensure an immediate solution to the identified problems, but this can also boost your per-customer revenue!
Diverse Your Services
Due to this obligatory rule, having an MOT bay in your garage allows you to diversify your services. Very commonly, drivers often prefer a one-stop shop for their automotive needs, what better to have everything under one roof? Not only this, being able to cater for all vehicles whether that’s passenger vehicles, motorcycles, vans or more, the ability to conduct MOT testing alongside other maintenance and repair services positions your garage in a comprehensive solution, attracting a huge customer base.
Competitive Advantage
The automotive industry is always growing therefore, it’s crucial as a business you stand out. MOT testing sets your garage apart from others, signalling to customers that you offer a variety of services and compliant solutions to their automotive needs. This competitive edge is a fantastic factor choosing where to take their vehicles for services and repairs. Not only that, as customers know you are a garage that can their automotive requirements, it establishes a positive word of mouth, building great trust with your customers.
In summary, the addition of MOT Testing to your workshop goes beyond meeting just a legal requirement. It becomes a vital way to increase sustainable revenue growth; an MOT Bay is an investment that pays itself in multiple ways! Are you ready to transform your garage’s revenue potential? From Closed Shop to Approved MOT Station in 6 Weeks for N&J Autocare, St Helens
All Blogs
Neil Causer, owner of N&J Autocare in St Helens chose V-Tech UK for the project management, supply and installation for their Class 4 MOT Bay. Neil took over an existing MOT station that had closed down and was recommended to us by MOT Expert who carried out his MOT tester training.
What sets this project apart is the need for speed, with the help of our customer Neil and our fantastic team, we were able to get this project completed within 6 weeks of Neil’s initial enquiry. As this customer had taken the keys and started to pay rent for the building, the clock was ticking and we were up for the challenge to prevent lost revenue and opportunities for Neil.
We visited the site shortly after Neil’s enquiry to measure up and identify the specific equipment needs for the bay to become a reality, CAD drawings were made and paperwork was prepared. The very first milestone was completing the VT01 application, a critical document required by the DVSA to set up an MOT Station. This was completed in an impressive 48 hours. The rapidity didn’t stop there, approval from the DVSA came in around 14 days, a process that can take weeks or even months.
Following this, our service & warehouse team organised delivery and installation in line with Neil’s requirements and the installation was complete within just 2 days.
The equipment installed for N&J Autocare consisted of the following:
- Ravaglioli Class 4 ATL 4 Post Lift
- BM7110 – BM Autoteknik Class 4 Non-ATL MTS Connected Brake Tester
- Majorlift 2T Manual Jacking Beam
- V-Tech Analogue Headlamp Aligner
- V-Tech Combi – MTS Connected Exhaust Gas Analyser & Diesel Smoke Meter
Not only do our team ensure we can meet rapid deadlines for MOT projects like this, but we’re also very passionate about ensuring we offer our customers the most cost-effective way of making their dream MOT Station come to life. With this said, we always do our best to see if past groundworks can work in our favour, and try to source equipment which will fit into existing holes. Luckily for Neil this was the case here, and we were able to help Neil save on additional groundworks by supplying a BM7110 Brake Tester which was able to simply slot straight into the existing recess, saving Neil and his business thousands of pounds.
Neil’s journey from an initial recommendation to a functioning MOT Station in a mere six weeks highlights the power of efficient project management, dedication, planning and the ability to overcome hurdles swiftly. It’s a testament to how a motivated team can make the impossible, possible! This project serves as an inspiration for those in the industry, showing that with the right strategy, commitment, and a dash of good fortune, remarkable accomplishments can be achieved in record time. With the thanks of Neil’s ambition and our incredible team’s hard work, Neil’s journey from an empty facility to an operational Class 4 MOT Bay is a shining example of how persistence and efficiency can transform dreams into reality, even when racing against the clock!
Neil has sent special thanks to our team since the supply and install and has recommended V-Tech as being a ‘very good company’ to work with for any MOT Bay needs.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK Put Their Trust In V-Tech

Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK invested in V-Tech’s Class 4 ATL Bay. The vehicle manufacturing plant at Burnaston in Derbyshire use their premises to service all of their used Toyota vehicles.
The car motor business sells their vehicles to hire and lease companies. However, once the vehicle is de-fleeted Toyota re-introduce these vehicles back into their dealer network and these vehicles are sold as ‘Approved Used Toyota Vehicle’.
The business, found that after the pandemic it was proven more and more difficult to source brand new vehicles for their customers. Therefore, by re-introducing the cars that have previously been hired out allowed Toyota to still be able to offer their customers a fantastic vehicle that could be available sooner rather than later. As not only have we seen that newer cars are harder to source, but delivery dates are far longer than normal, with customers having to wait months for their new vehicle to even be in the country.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
As standard, Toyota ensure that all vehicles handed back by the hire companies are returned into the used Toyota network same standard as a new vehicle and carry out a PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) and a full MOT. This is to ensure that the vehicles they are re-selling through their approved used car network are as good as new.
The business now has the ability to carry out the MOT themselves in-house with our Class 4 ATL Bay. This allows them to have full control of the vehicles MOT testing ensuring that the test is done professionally and accurately by their very own Toyota Approved Mechanics. By being able to carry out MOT tests in-house also allows them to ensure that the tests are done within a timely manner to ensure that vehicles are ready for immediate dispatch to their customers.

Benefits of investing in your own MOT Bay for servicing your own fleet/vehicles include:
- Full control of your vehicles
- Ability to reduce vehicle downtime (as you decide how long your vehicle is off the road for and when)
- Cut costs of external MOT testing
- Ensure that the test has been done professionally and efficiently
- No need to try to book in with an external business who may not be able to fit you in when needed
At V-Tech we offer a huge range of MOT Bay configurations to suit your exact workshop space. Here’s what’s included in our Class 4 ATL Bay, which was the perfect fit for Toyota.
OMA-EV45JC – 4.5T Class 4 ATL Scissor Lift
Class 4 ATL DVSA MTS Connected Brake Tester
VT2401/UK/R – DVSA Approved Headlamp Tester

V-Tech are pleased to announce that we have helped global multi-million-pound business, Serco after they invited us to tender for their latest workshop project. The business operates 11 workshops in and around the UK. They recently decided to combine two of their existing workshops into one to have one main site which caters for all types of commercial automotive services.
The two existing sites in Thetford and Dereham were equipped with a variety of commercial workshop equipment, which needed to be transported from both sites to the new main workshop in Watton, Norfolk. They also required additional workshop equipment which they didn’t have throughout the other two sites.
As leading garage equipment suppliers, we were able to supply Serco with premium quality workshop equipment for their new build. This included our BM20200 Commercial Mobile Brake Tester, Headlamp Aligner & Exhaust Extraction. We also arranged for a sub-contractor to assist with the transportation of the workshop equipment at their other sites and the full installation of their latest investments. This full installation also included full electrical services to the workshop and even provided top-quality resin pouring services to deliver a high finish epoxy floor.
We completed the whole project within 4 weeks from initial enquiry. During this time, we visited the site to understand the needs of the business, created a CAD drawing for the new workshop layout, appointed a sub-contractor to assist in the transportation of goods and the install of equipment, and project managed the entire project from start to finish.

MOT Bays – Case Study

We are pleased to announce that we have installed a full MOT Bay at Bargeddie Auto Services. Bargeddie Auto Services is an passenger workshop in Glasgow which are known to provide professional automotive services such as MOT’s, vehicle repairs and more.

By investing in their own MOT testing equipment, they will harvest more profit margin and can now offer complete vehicle services.
The workshop couldn’t have chosen a better time to become an MOT Test Centre as the demand for MOT’s is significantly high at the moment due to the Covid-19 mot extension regulations.

The whole process from me getting a quote to the equipment being delivered and installed was relatively quick and the team were really helpful. It’s good that they can install the equipment as well as supply it because normally I have to ring around to try and find someone who can fit it for me, so it saved a lot of time.
